Police urge householders to stay secure

POLICE today issued a warning to residents to properly secure their properties after a spate of break-ins in a single night.

A total of six properties throughout East Lothian and Midlothian were targeted by thieves between Thursday night and the early hours of Friday morning.

Two properties in Musselburgh, and one each in Penicuik, Dalkeith, Wallyford and Tranent were broken into and items stolen. Police said all of the homes were not properly secured.

A police spokesperson said: "There are some simple steps that can be taken to deter opportunists.

"Always ensure keys, money and other valuables are stored safely, and avoid leaving them on display. In addition, keep doors and windows locked and consider fitting a burglar alarm and using timer plugs."
