Police step up patrols after teenage boy's death

Police are to carry out extra patrols in the area where a teenager died, in a bid to ease tensions in the community.

Dale Bennett, 17, from Mayfield, Midlothian, died after an incident in Newbyres Road, in nearby Gorebridge, early last Saturday. He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he died.

A 20-year-old has appeared in court, charged with his murder.

Earlier this week, Dale's parents, Garry and Michelle, said: "He was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, uncle and nephew and was a very caring and loving person, and we are struggling to accept he is no longer with us."

They appealed to the local community to remain calm in the wake of Dale's death and said: "People who knew Dale would know that he was the kind of lad who would not want any retribution sought for his death, and we would like to appeal to the local communities to respect his memory."

This weekend, officers will carry out high-visibility patrols in Gorebridge, Mayfield and Dalkeith to provide reassurance to the local community and try to find potential witnesses.

Inspector Mike Bennett, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "We remain keen to speak to anyone who has information about Dale's death who has not yet been in touch with police."
