Police sniffer dog tracks down teenager who broke into shop

A TEENAGER who broke into a shop was caught after a police sniffer dog tracked him to his hiding place, a court has heard.

David Colley, 17, was snared after the talented pooch was brought in to probe the break-in at Eastfield Newsagents in Penicuik, on November 30.

The animal picked up Colley’s scent and led police officers to a house that the teenager was staying at, Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard yesterday.

Depute fiscal Ruth Ross Davie said eyewitnesses saw Colley and others wearing dark clothing breaking into the store in the town’s Eastfield Avenue at 3am.

Colley managed to get away with just 10 packets of chewing gum.

Colley, described as a prisoner of HMP Saughton, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering into Eastfield Newsagents and stealing the chewing gum.

He also pleaded guilty to breaking a bail order which had been issued at Edinburgh Sheriff Court earlier this year.

Sentence was deferred until later this month to obtain reports.
