Police probe 'suspicious' building fire

POLICE are treating a blaze which broke out at the Old Mansion House in Dalkeith as suspicious.

The fire at the Newmills Road building, which was being renovated, started just before 9pm on Tuesday.

The fire was in the roof space on the second floor and was breaking through the roof when 37 firefighters arrived to tackle the flames.

They used three jets, a ground monitor and a light portable pump to battle the blaze over a one-hour period.

Nobody was in the building at the time of the fire.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: "Police are investigating a suspicious fire that broke out within an address in Newmills Road, Dalkeith.

"Anyone who was in the area at around the time of the blaze, who noticed any suspicious activity, should contact police immediately."
