Police officer charged over road death

A POLICE officer has been charged in connection with a Hogmanay road accident in which a pedestrian died.

Martin Douglas, 41, was crossing Union Place, near the Edinburgh Playhouse, when he was struck by a black Toyota.

Lothian and Borders Police said a 25-year-old police officer had been charged.

Mr Douglas, from Hay Gardens, was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he died a short time later.

In a statement, the force said today: "Lothian and Borders Police can confirm a 25-year-old police officer has been charged in relation to an alleged road traffic offence on January 1, 2011.

"A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."

Mr Douglas's father, Lewis Douglas, 68, told yesterday how the family had been left devastated by his death. Mr Douglas had four children with his partner, Lisa.
