Police name missing Shetland canoeist

THE canoeist missing off the coast of Shetland was today named by police as Kester Jonathon Wigram.

The 51-year-old, originally from Wellington in New Zealand, has been living in Shetland for over ten years.

Coastguard teams had scaled down their search over the weekend after the chances of survival were judged to be "long gone".

Mr Wigram, described as an experience canoeist, was last seen in a wetsuit on Thursday morning when he carried a red canoe to the St Ninians' Isle beach.

The alarm was raised by a local resident the following morning who had noticed that Mr Wigram's Vauxhall car was still in the carpark.

A spokesman for Northern Constabulary said that their enquiries were ongoing.

On Saturday, a Shetland Coastguard spokesman said: "The survivability is now long gone. He would only have had one hour or so survival time if he had been in the water."
