He suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he later died.

Strathclyde Police have now launched a murder investigation and released a description of the man suspected of carrying out the attack.

He is described as being of Chinese appearance, 6ft 1in, slim build and with short black hair.

He was wearing a dark beanie style hat, a waist-length zipped jacket and black woollen gloves.

Superintendent Nelson Telfer, of city centre police office, said: "The public must be reassured that this is a very unusual incident and that the city centre is a safe place to work in, live in and visit.

"We are treating this attack very seriously and a number of high visibility officers will be patrolling the entire city centre in a bid to promote public reassurance.

"We will be working with our partner agencies to make the city centre even safer and the extra patrols will deter criminal activity.

"Anyone with concerns should contact their local police office."

He added: "Inquiries are at an early stage to establish the exact circumstances surrounding this horrific and totally unprovoked attack.

"We know the man was going between jobs in Bothwell Street and Bath Street. The area would have been particularly busy at this time of night with people leaving work and heading home or people heading out for a meal or drink.

He said officers were carrying out inquiries in the area and were looking at CCTV footage, and he appealed for witnesses.
