Police launch murder inquiry following man's death in East Lothian town

POLICE are treating the death of a man who was assaulted in Tranent, East Lothian last night as murder.

Officers were called to Toll House Gardens at around 4am where they found the injured man.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene but died from his injuries.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Police said his death was being treated as suspicious.

The spokesman said: "Inquiries are at a very early stage, and investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances of the man's death.

"Police are appealing for information in connection with this incident, and would ask anyone who was in the area the time, or who has any information that may assist this inquiry to come forward."

No further details were released about the dead man.

A major incident team has been established and an incident room has been set up at Dalkeith police station, where a team of 20 officers will be based.

Detective Chief Inspector Willie Guild, who is leading the inquiry, said: "This young man has been the victim of a violent attack and we are appealing for help from the public in order to identify his killer.

"We are asking anyone who was in the area around 4am this morning, and who may have seen or heard something suspicious, to get in touch.

"It is also important anyone who has any information in connection with this murder comes forward, either directly to us, or anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers."
