Police said CCTV images from the area showed that there were around 12 people in the vicinity of the Montgomerie Bar at the time of the assault.

Detective Superintendent Alan Buchanan, of Strathclyde Police, said: "We know Matthew was the victim of a violent attack and that a number of people were in the area at the time, and would have witnessed the assault and seen his attacker.

"We are currently in the process of tracing these witnesses but I would appeal to anyone who was there to contact us as a matter of urgency. A young man's life has been cut short due to a senseless act of violence.

"I understand that some people may not want to come forward but I want to assure them and the wider community that any information received will be treated confidentially."

An incident room has been set up.
