"A murder inquiry has been launched," a spokesman for Strathclyde Police said.

He added: "Following a post-mortem examination, the death is now being treated as murder and a murder inquiry has been launched.

"Information can be passed to Shettleston CID on telephone number 0141 532 4814 or alternatively Crimestoppers be called anonymously on 0800 555 111."

The results of the post-mortem have not been released.

A forensic team has been examining the property in Cockenzie Street and officers have spoken to neighbours in a bid to trace the attacker.

Police have also been checking CCTV footage from the area in the hope to tracing people who were in the area at the time of the murder.

Detective Inspector Graham Cordner said: "I am keen to hear from anyone who was in the general area, and who may have seen something that was not quite right or saw someone acting suspiciously. Any information could be useful at this time."
