Police launch blitz on drunk drivers

POLICE have launched a two-week blitz against motorists drinking alcohol or taking drugs before getting behind the wheel.

The crackdown, which began on Monday and runs until June 18, will see high-visibility patrols and unmarked vehicles deployed on roads in Edinburgh. The operation is part of a national summer drink/drug drive campaign, which is being spearheaded by the Association of Chief Police Officers Scotland.

Chief Superintendent Derek Robertson, of Lothian and Borders Police said: “During last summer’s campaign we detected 245 people for drink driving and 21 who were unfit through drugs in Scotland.

“That is totally unacceptable and it is worth remembering that many of those will still be serving a driving ban.”
