Two passers-by discovered John McMurchie in Fintry Terrace, near its junction with Whitfield Drive, in Dundee at about 4am on Sunday.

He was taken to the city’s Ninewells hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Tayside Police said that a 63-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the investigation.

They appealed for information as they try to piece together Mr McMurchie’s last movements.

Detective Inspector Bobby Dow said: “We know that Mr McMurchie was at an address in Murrayfield Gardens prior to being found seriously injured in Fintry Terrace. It’s believed he left that address shortly after 3.30am.

“We want to establish his movements between leaving that address and then being discovered about half an hour later, and we are aware that people were in the area at the time.

“Whether they were people making their way home after a night out or from work; out late at night walking the dog; or taxi drivers dropping off fares; our appeal goes out to them.

“If you were in the area, we want to speak with you.”

Mr McMurchie was from Errol in Perthshire.
