Police investigate fraud allegations at troubled Hamilton Accies

DETECTIVES are investigating an allegation of fraud at struggling Hamilton Academical Football Club, it emerged last night.

Auditors of the cash-strapped second division team are understood to be unhappy with company accounts and have called in police to investigate.

Yesterday morning, officers from Hamilton CID arrived at the Ballast Stadium after receiving the complaint and have started initial inquiries into the claims.

Although there were few details about the nature of the investigation, it is understood that it revolves around money earmarked for kitchen equipment at the club’s ground.

Sources claim that auditors discovered that some of the supply companies listed in accounts either allegedly do not exist or, despite being named in ledgers, have apparently had no contact with the Accies.

Last night a spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police confirmed that officers had been called in to investigate.

She added: "I can confirm that a complaint has been received by local police regarding an allegation of financial irregularities at Hamilton Academical Football Club. Inquiries are at an early stage."

A source close to the club claimed there was major friction between directors and shareholders.

Senior figures, however, blanked media inquiries last night.

Scott Struthers, the club secretary, said he had no knowledge of the complaint or any police action. But he added: "I have heard whispers that something is going on at the moment." Bill Donnelly, the financial director, refused to comment. He said: "I have absolutely nothing to say about events at the club. I cannot say any more."

Bill Sherry, another director, added: "I have heard nothing. I have not been at the club today and I am completely taken aback by this."

Hamilton’s major shareholder, Jim Watson, was unavailable for comment.

The club finished last season in crisis after players and staff went on strike due to unpaid wages. However, before the start of this season, they were told the club could pay them some of the money owed.
