Police investigate former soldier's sudden death

DETECTIVES are continuing their investigation into the sudden death of a former soldier whose body was found at his home in the Buchan town of Fraserburgh at the weekend.

Grampian Police were called to the home of Brian Smart, 63, in Dennyduff Road after his body was discovered in the living room on Saturday night.

The ground-floor flat and a neighbouring property were both cordoned off while investigations began. Detectives are awaiting post-mortem results.

Detective Inspector Paul McCruden, who is heading the investigation, said: "At this time we are still treating the death as unexplained. Inquiry officers are still based at the scene and there is a team of detectives speaking to potential witnesses."

Mr Smart was a former member of the Buchan Pipe Band. Malcolm Sweet, the band's secretary, said: "Everyone is so sad to hear about this. Brian joined the band in 1994 and he stayed for eight years. He was an active fundraiser."
