Police inquiry after man collapses and dies

The man at the centre of an "unexplained and sudden death" investigation after he was found lying in the street near a busy shopping centre has been named.

Grampian Police launched an investigation into the death of Alexander McKay, 63, after he was found lying near a shopping precinct in Elgin on Thursday night. Mr McKay was taken by ambulance to Dr Gray's Hospital in the town, where he died a short time later.

He had been carrying a rucksack and is believed to have been walking towards the Northport car park when he collapsed.

A spokesman for Grampian Police said the force was treating his death as an "unexplained sudden death".

He said: "Mr McKay was found by passers-by lying in the pedestrianised area between High Street and Northport car park in Elgin.

"Mr McKay was found in possession of a blue rucksack containing personal belongings and is believed to have been walking towards the Northport car park, from the direction of the Muckle Cross public house on High Street, prior to his collapse."
