Police injured in M8 motorway collision

TWO police officers were taken to hospital today after their vehicle was involved in a smash on Glasgow's M8 motorway.

Their car, which had its blue lights on, collided with a Volkswagen Polo near Bishopton at around 3.30am this morning.

The two Strathclyde Police officers were taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley for treatment and later released.

One suffered minor injuries to his neck and shoulders and the other received 21 stitches to his left arm.

The 27-year-old driver of the VW Polo was also taken to the hospital but was uninjured.

The M8 was closed for six hours following the accident, causing major disuption for morning commuters.

Although the police car had its blue lights on, it was not responding to an emergency call.

Police are investigating why the car had its blue lights on but it is not thought it was pursuing the vehicle it was in collision with.
