Police hunting for missing woman find body

POLICE in the west of Scotland investigating the disappearance of a woman with learning difficulties have said a body has been found in a river in Renfrewshire.

Susan Marshall from Cardonald in Glasgow was last seen with her family at her sister’s home in Penilee in the city on 31 August.

The body was pulled from the River Gryffe in Houston on Friday morning by officers.

There had been suggestions the 55-year-old could have headed towards the nearby Renfrew Ferry.

Marshall was later spotted near the Xscape entertainment centre, around 17 miles from the village where the body was found on Friday.

Her sister said last week that the family still hoped she would be found alive, describing the disappearance as “out of character”.

Irene Marshall said last week: “The family has never given up hope, and we never will, but it’s a total mystery as to what happened to Susan.

“My daughter and I have looked after Susan for years and this is just so out of character for her.

“We know that she was seen near to the Renfrew Ferry as she was caught on the corner of a CCTV film, but that’s the last information we have.

“We don’t actually know if she got on the ferry or whether she turned back after that and headed in the direction of Paisley – it’s all speculation.”

She added that her sister was “innocent” and “trusting”, and had previously lived a sheltered life. Her sister, she said, was not “prepared for life out there”.

She added: “All sorts of things go through your mind but you have to try and remain focused. It has been an agonising six weeks since she went missing.”
