Council workers came to her aid as she lay in the street. She was taken to the nearby Victoria Infirmary.

Constable Grant McHarrie of Strathclyde police said: "Whoever is responsible for this crime is despicable. Every reasoned person will be disgusted by this attack."

"I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time to get in touch. If you know anything about this crime or the person responsible, call us."

The man - who ran up Eskdale Street after the attack - is described as 5ft 10in and slim. He was wearing a grey hooded top and jeans.
