Police said the assault could have been much worse if the friend had not been there.

The two women were attacked as they walked from Gordon Street to Wellington Street to use a cashpoint.

The man, described as Asian, aged 20-25 years and around 5ft 7in, grabbed the woman and assaulted her, then ran off.

Detective Constable Alyson Bolton of Strathclyde police said: "This was a terrifying attack on this young woman which could have been much worse had she and her friend not bravely fought off this predator.

"I would ask anyone who was in the Gordon Street, Hope Street, Wellington Street area of Glasgow city centre on Wednesday morning around the time of the assault to contact me as soon as possible."
