Police fear the attacker may attempt to threaten other people in a similar manner.

Detective Constable Scott Brockie of Strathclyde Police said: “This was a very nasty and extremely frightening ordeal for the young girl involved.

“Thankfully, she did not require hospital treatment but she is absolutely terrified by what has happened.

“A couple of people came to her aid and I would ask that they contact police as they might have information that will help us catch the man responsible.

“He had a plastic bottle in his hand and threatened to squirt what he claimed to be a corrosive liquid at her if she didn’t hand over money.

“How callous was he and how frightening was this for her?”

The attacker is described as in his 20s, 5ft 10in, with short black hair and sunken features.

He was wearing a grey hooded top with the number six in white on the back, black trousers and white trainers.
