Police hunt armed thief over robbery

POLICE are hunting an armed robber who held up a man at knifepoint near Waverley Station before escaping along the High Street.

The 22-year-old victim had been walking up the News Steps from Market Street towards North Bank Street at around 10.50pm on Sunday.

The suspect approached him and pulled out a knife, robbing the victim of a small quantity of cash.

The suspect is described as being white, between 30 to 40 years old, 5ft 8in to 5ft 9in tall, stocky build, with short thinning light brown hair.

He spoke with a Scottish accent, and was wearing a dark sports jacket with a zip up the middle, and dark trousers.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesperson said: "Fortunately no-one was injured in this incident, but we would appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time, and who saw what happened, to contact us."
