Police find getaway car used in Asda car park shooting

Kevin Carroll, 29, was shot dead while he sat in the back of an Audi car outside the Asda store in Robroyston, Glasgow, on Wednesday.

He is said to have links with the criminal underworld and survived an attempt on his life three years ago.

Police said they believe three masked men were involved in the shooting.

The getaway car – a Volkswagen Golf with the registration YF55 EZZ – was set on fire and dumped around six miles from the scene in Yetts Hole Road, Glenmavis, Airdrie.

Detective Superintendent Michael Orr of Strathclyde Police said the car had cloned plates, was stolen in September from the Rutherglen area, and originally had the registration AD04 UFC.

The car is being examined by forensics officers.

Mr Orr, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are carrying out inquiries to establish where this car has been kept over the past four months.

"Did the killers steal it for this purpose? How long has it been bearing cloned plates?

"Has it been driven or was it stored in a lock-up or garage until it was used on Wednesday afternoon? Has it simply been lying in the street? These are all questions that we will be looking for answers to.

"I would again appeal to members of the public who have not yet come forward and know something about this crime to speak to police."

Mr Orr said police had an "encouraging response" from shoppers at Asda on Wednesday and said he wanted to thank them for their patience and co-operation.

He added: "I have no doubt that there are people out there who know who was involved in this crime and have reservations about coming forward.

"I would urge them to do so without delay as it is vital that these killers are arrested and brought to justice.

"There was an alarming degree of recklessness in the execution of this attack and although I have stated previously that the victim was clearly targeted, there is no doubt that someone standing nearby could have been injured."

A post-mortem examination has been carried out and police have formally identified Carroll, of Lennoxtown, East Dunbartonshire.

Police would not confirm that Carroll was shot in the head.

Witnesses, who were in the supermarket at the time of the shooting, said they heard several loud bangs.

Two other men who were in the black Audi with Carroll at the time of the shooting were uninjured.
