Police arrest man after armed siege of Glasgow flat

A MAN was arrested today after an eight-hour siege at a Glasgow flat during which suspected grenades were thrown from a window.

Armed police were called to the flat in Dumbarton Road in the Partick area of the city after a man barricaded himself inside following a disturbance.

Officers and negotiators were sent to the scene at around 7.30am and a police cordon was set up around the area.

During the stand-off, objects thought to be grenades were thrown from one of the windows of a block of flats onto the street below, within the cordon on Dumbarton Road.

Army bomb disposal experts went to the scene and a massive police cordon was set up around the area.

Some people were evacuated from nearby buildings and shops near the block of flats were closed.

Police said the man was arrested around 4.15pm.

Outside the police tape, a Royal Logistic Corps bomb disposal truck was parked.

An Army spokeswoman said: "Strathclyde Police tasked the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from Edinburgh this morning. We travelled through to the scene of the incident and are awaiting further instructions from police."
