PM's hope for Arctic convoy veterans

PRIME Minister David Cameron has backed calls for the veterans of one of the Second World War's most arduous but unrecognised campaigns to receive a medal.

During Prime Minister's questions, Mr Cameron offered hope to the last remaining veterans of the Arctic convoys who sailed through a gauntlet of Nazi battleship, submarine and air attacks in sub-zero conditions between 1941 and 1945 to keep the Soviet Union in the war.

For over a decade veterans of the campaign have been campaigning for a medal.

Mr Cameron said: "There is a case for saying they have missed out. Many of them are coming to the end of their lives and it would be good if we could do something more to recognise what they have done."
