Plans to shoot hedgehogs in cull are shelved

PLANS to shoot hedgehogs as part of a cull to protect bird species have been temporarily shelved, it emerged yesterday.

Scottish Natural Heritage is to investigate "alternative legal routes" to see if it can use dogs to hunt the hedgehogs in the Outer Hebrides without having to shoot them.

More than a quarter of the staff at the Astronomy Technology Centre in Edinburgh's Royal Observatory could lose their jobs in planned redundancies. Falls in demand and funding mean as many as 25 of the 90 jobs may have to go.
