Plan to save heritage site

THE city's world heritage site is set to receive special protection to ensure that any new buildings are "sympathetic" to the surrounding landscape.

Under new proposals, developers would be ordered to ensure the existing "traditional townscape character" is preserved, it was reported today.

It is expected that a buffer zone around the Old and New Towns would be created following rows over hotel plans.

Adam Wilkinson, director of Edinburgh World Heritage, said: "It helps us to prioritise ways of conserving and enhancing the world heritage site."
