Plan to move Gaelic classes wins approval

the proposal to move primary Gaelic Medium Education (GME) to the former Bonnington Primary School has gained the approval of Leith Community Council.

The move is one option under consideration by the city council to cope with soaring demand for Gaelic education. The other is to extend the provision currently offered at Tollcross Primary. In response to a council consultation, Roland Reid, secretary of the community council, said it would be "delighted" if the area were to host a dedicated GME school.

He said the move would also resolve the question of the future of the Bonnington Primary building, which was due to be sold for development. He wrote: "Unless the city council can source funding for a non-commercial redevelopment it may be prudent when considering the two GME options to factor out the resale value of the school and factor in an ongoing maintenance cost."
