Plan to entice Chinese golfers to the Highlands

A PITCH is being made to entice some of the one million registered golfers in China to the Highlands.

A delegation from the north of Scotland will today attend the China Golf Show, one of the largest trade events in Asia, in a bid to ensure the region is on visiting golfers’ itineraries.

Highland Golf Links, a promotional body representing three of the area’s links courses and four major hotels, hopes there is some eastern promise in attracting a new market.

China has a rapidly growing economy and a million registered golfers and figures show China is one of Scotland’s emerging international markets. In 2013 tourists from China made 34,000 visits to the country, spending a total of £34 million.

Golf tourism is a major contributor to Scotland’s economy and is estimated to be worth close to £220m annually, with forecasts of reaching £300m by the end of the decade.
