Pirates seize record number of hostages

Pirates took a record 1,181 hostages last year, figures released yesterday have shown.

They hijacked 53 vessels worldwide in 2010 - all but four off the coast of Somalia - the International Maritime Bureau said. Somali pirates are currently holding 31 vessels and 713 crew.
