Pipe Major victim of North Uist road accident

THE pedestrian who died in the early hours of Sunday morning after being struck by a car in the Western Isles has been named as Ivan Macdonald, 33, from Baleshare, North Uist.

Mr Macdonald, a talented piper and a prominent member of the local crofting community, was treated by paramedics following the collision but died at the scene of the accident.

The collision happened at 1.45am on Sunday on the A865 between Clachan and Carinish on North Uist. The road was closed for almost 14 hours while crash scene investigators carried out a detailed examination of the area.

The accident took place close to the Carinish Village Hall and involved a black Renault Clio. It is understood Mr Macdonald had been at a function at the Carinish Hall before the accident.

Mr Macdonald was Pipe Major of the Uist Pipe Band and was also vice chairman of the Scottish Crofting Federation on the Uists.

A spokesman for the northern Division of Police Scotland said: “Police Scotland are appealing for anyone with any information regarding the collision who has not spoken to the Police to contact them on telephone number 101 or speak to any police officer.”
