Piglet found swimming in River Don is rescued

A YOUNG piglet has been taken into the care of Scotland’s leading animal welfare charity after being spotted swimming in the River Don on the outskirts of Aberdeen.

The female piglet was rescued from the river after being seen in the Don, swimming between both banks, by members of the public on Friday afternoon, close to the Tesco store on Laurel Drive in the Danestone area of the city.

But how the young pig ended up in the river remains a mystery.

The piglet is now being cared for at the Scottish SPCA’s Aberdeenshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre, where she has been named Georgie.

Inspector Fiona McKenzie of the SSPCA, said,:”We believe Georgie is a mangalitsa pig, which are also known as curly-haired hogs. Georgie was swimming between the river banks so we were able to catch her

once she came ashore.”

She continued: “It’s a bit of a mystery as to how she came to be there as we’re not aware of any farms nearby. Georgie has settled in well at the centre and has already become a

favourite with staff.

“If no-one comes forward for Georgie, we’ll be looking to find her a permanent home.”

She added: “”We think Georgie still has quite a lot of growing to do, so ideally she’ll need a small-holding with plenty of space to roam.”
