Phone analysis 'put accused near home of murdered DJ'

A TELECOMS expert has told a court that analysis of a murder accused's mobile phone places him at or near to radio presenter Nasim Jamil's home the day she died.

Martin Griffiths, 44, of LGC Forensics in Worcestershire, was giving evidence at the trial of Khalid Sarwar, 29, who denies murdering 54-year-old agony aunt Mrs Jamil in her flat in Byres Road, Glasgow, on 9 December last year.

Mr Griffiths told prosecutor Dorothy Bain QC he analysed phone calls made to and from Sarwar's mobile phone from 2pm onwards on 9 December and calculated which mobile mast they were next to when the calls were made. He was asked if a call made at 2:30pm was consistent with Sarwar being located at or in the vicinity of Mrs Jamil's flat and replied: "Yes."

Mrs Jamil, a presenter with Awaz FM, was last seen alive just before 2pm in Byres Road. Her battered body was found in the kitchen of her home by her daughter, Nazia, when she returned from work that evening.

Under cross-examination by defence QC Donald Findlay, Mr Griffiths was asked: "As far as the call at 7:21pm is concerned, the data is consistent with it being made at or near Circus Place?" and he replied: "That's correct."

He added the call could also have been made from the vicinity of Hunter Street.

Mr Griffiths was then asked what being in the vicinity meant in that context.

Mr Findlay asked: "Is it 100 yards, 200 yards, 400 yards?" and he replied: "The only way you can tell is by going there and measuring."

The trial continues.
