Peter Monteith: The dizzying heights of a winning career

DURING a training career that stretched over three decades Peter Monteith achieved some of the highest accolades possible.

He trained more than 400 winners during his career, among them Moment Of Truth, who he also owned, whose 17 victories included a success in the Grade 1 Northumberland Novices' Chase at Newcastle in 1990, and 12-time winner Rossel.

Possibly the highlight of his training career, however, was to have saddled Dizzy, owned by his father Col Monteith, to win the County Hurdle at Cheltenham in 1994, a rare feat for a Scottish trainer.

However, he enjoyed his best season in 2007-08 with 34 winners, a considerable feat in Scottish racing circles, and had saddled four winners to date this campaign.

Earlier on the day of his death, Mr Monteith had been at Kelso where he saddled three runners, two of which had placed second and third.

But beyond his success on the track, racing experts praised Mr Monteith's ability to keep going "through thick and thin", making the most of his limited resources.
