Perjury jail term leads to lifetime classroom ban

A TEACHER who was jailed for lying about his part in a pub glassing attack has been banned from teaching for life.

John Mann, 32, was found not guilty by a jury after he said the injuries he inflicted on Mark Allison in an Edinburgh bar in July 2005 were accidental.

But the teacher was jailed for two years for perjury in August last year after CCTV footage later emerged showing he had attacked his victim without provocation.

The attack, in the capital's Cougar Bar, left Mr Allison permanently disfigured.

Mann - who taught at St Aiden's High School in Wishaw - was struck from the teaching register following a conviction hearing of the General Teaching Council for Scotland yesterday.

The GTCS panel took into consideration Mann's previous good character and conduct, but concluded the conviction was "extremely serious".

The GTCS panel said: "The sub-committee is satisfied that the respondent had been convicted by a jury of the crime of perjury and had failed to uphold standards of honesty and integrity, and had failed to maintain an awareness of his position as a role model."
