Pensioner seriously injured after attack by gang outside bowling club

A PENSIONER was in a serious condition in hospital last night after an "unprovoked" attack that police are treating as attempted murder.

The man, 72, was among three other people who went to help a 21-year-old man being attacked by a group of up to ten youths on Friday night.

The 21-year-old was attending a private function at the bowling club and went outside, where he was attacked by the group.

The other two men, who were aged 47 and 20, were also injured in the fight outside Springboig Bowling Club, Glasgow, at about 11.50pm.

Strathclyde Police said the pensioner was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he was treated for a serious head injury.

The 21-year-old man was also kept in the hospital for treatment to facial injuries.

Detective Sergeant Roland Craig said: "Our inquiries have revealed that this would appear to be a totally unprovoked attack on these four men, who were merely attending a private function at a local bowling club.

"The injuries that the elderly man sustained are very serious and we are treating this attack in particular as attempted murder.

"We believe that the group of youths responsible had been hanging around the area for quite some time prior to the disturbance taking place outside the bowling club.

"I'd like to speak to anyone who perhaps saw this large group hanging around near to the club or anyone who has any information that could assist us in identifying those responsible for these mindless attacks."
