Pensioner dies in early morning blaze

AN ELDERLY pensioner died yesterday in an early morning blaze at a cottage in Angus.

The 80-year-old woman, who has still to be named, died in the house fire at Panmure Street in Carnoustie, which was discovered at about 4:15am.

The cottage and two nearby houses were cordoned off by police and a canopy was erected over the doorway of the cottage to allow investigators to carry out an examination of the scene.

A spokesman for Tayside Police said: "Tayside Fire and Rescue quickly extinguished the blaze, but tragically the sole occupant died as a result of the fire."

A report will be sent to the procurator-fiscal.
