Gutzi, owned by distance runner Lucy Colquhoun, from Peebles, creates energy-boosting savoury food suitable for athletes during competitions.

The start-up claimed first prize at last year’s New Start event, which included a £5,000 cash injection and £15,000 worth of business support services.

Gutzi used the investment to build its brand, fund product development trials and carry out product testing with more than 800 athletes.

The brand is now targeting an official launch in local and overseas markets.

Colquhoun said: “Winning the New Start Scotland competition last year was such a huge boost to my business, both in terms of much-needed funding and exposure.”

Ultra runner Colquhoun ran distances up to 100 miles and represented Scotland and Great Britain. However, she suffered from stomach problems during competitions and was unable to find suitable food which stopped nausea and provided enough salts for endurance events.

She said: “It is vital to keep re-fuelling during races which can last all day, sometimes even several days, and I knew there wasn’t a snack product available for endurance sports which was portable, palatable and also easy to digest.

“We have now built up a strong following amongst endurance cyclists and runners, and our research confirms the demand for savoury sports fuel.

“The next step is to officially launch the product and to start selling internationally, then we will introduce new flavours and further expand our product range.”
