Parking plan abandoned

A proposed extension to the areas where residents are charged for parking has been cancelled.

The city council had planned to extend the controlled parking zone (CPZ) to the Ashley/Harrison zone in 2009. Officials have been looking into the proposal for nearly three years.

But councillors have now approved a proposal by council officials to abandon the plans.

In a report, the council’s director of services for communities, Mark Turley, said: “The results of the public consultation indicate there was insufficient support among residents within the proposed area to justify an extension of the CPZ.

“Whilst financial reasons were the main reasons cited for opposing the proposals, the second reason concerns the reduced amount of parking spaces that would be available.”
