Parents warned of battery danger

Parents were warned yesterday of the danger of children swallowing camera batteries.

Doctors said severe injury to the oesophagus, the tube connecting the throat to the stomach, can occur if a child swallows one of the pill-like disc batteries, after US researchers discovered that chemicals can leak out. Author Dr Stanley Kimball said: "Severe injury can occur rapidly following disc battery ingestion."
