Parents hit back over nursery move

PARENTS with children at a high-rise nursery condemned as unsafe by council bosses have hit back at the decision.

Education chiefs ruled last week that children who attend Westfield Court Nursery in Gorgie will be moved elsewhere, after a health and safety report revealed serious concerns about evacuation procedures from the eight-storey building. The children will now be moved by the end of November.

However parents believe the health and safety reasons are just a "smoke screen" for education bosses who are looking for an "excuse" to close it down.

Sheena Johnstone, whose four-year-old daughter Chenai attends the nursery, said: "If it is such a risk then why are they prepared to keep them in for extra weeks?"

City education leader Marilyne MacLaren said: "We cannot ignore a health and safety report which recommends a move."
