Pakistani rapist still not deported after 7 years

A PAKISTANI national who was convicted of rape 14 years ago is still living and working in an Edinburgh takeaway, despite authorities ordering him to be deported in 2006.

Shafqat Ranjha’s most recent appeal was to ask for a judicial review at the Court of Session, which was refused last week.

In his ruling last week in court, Lord Docherty said that despite the hearing being before him for two days, he had “no difficulty” deciding that the petition should be refused.

Ranjha, of Edinburgh, was convicted of rape in 1999 after he attacked a young gay woman in Leith, who was left pregnant and traumatised by the ordeal.

He was released after serving six years of his nine-year sentence and was notified of an intention to deport him in 2006.

Sentencing him at the time, Lord Kingarth told the High Court in Edinburgh he had subjected her to a prolonged, degrading and indecent act.

Ranjha, 55, who still maintains his innocence, then obtained legal aid and launched ten failed court and tribunal cases that have delayed his deportation.

Scottish Conservative chief whip John Lamont said he was “mocking” the justice system.
