Pair suffer separate crashes as boulders left lying on street

POLICE are investigating after two radio DJs crashed into boulders lying on a popular road, at the same time and while travelling in opposite directions.

• Diane Lester and Dave Konov both suffered crashes on Queensferry Road

Forth Radio's Dingo Dave and Kingdom FM's Diane Lester were driving along Queensferry Road, heading east and west respectively on their ways to work, when they came across the large rocks, including one which was "nearly as big as a beanbag".

It is thought that a number of other drivers also hit the large, jagged rocks scattered across both sides of the road on the morning of January 13.

Today Ms Lester, known as Dynamic Di, said she had feared she was "done for" after she careered into the 2ft-tall boulder at 4.45am.

She explained that she thought her mind was "playing tricks" on her when she saw the huge lump, which she originally thought was a bin bag, lying on the road to Fife.

Ms Lester, who lives in the New Town, said: "I did think I was done for, for a moment. There was somebody overtaking me on the road at the time, so I had no choice but to crash into it. I thought 'If I brake, that'll be it' because there was a lorry behind me. So I went into it. The boulder was very substantial. In the early morning your mind plays tricks on you, I couldn't quite believe it.

"It was a huge shock and the car is very damaged. I'm told it needs a new bumper, fog lamp and undertray.

"I reported it to the police straightaway. Luckily my on-air husband, Ian Gilmour, lived round the corner so he came and rescued me."

She added: "If it was kids it was incredibly stupid."

Incredibly, her friend and fellow DJ, Dave Konov, better known as Dingo Dave, suffered the same experience. Driving from his home in Barnton to Edinburgh, he crashed into a "football-sized" rock at around 5am, badly damaging his car.

He said: "I was talking about the incident on Facebook afterwards, and I discovered it had happened to Di too, but on the opposite side of the road. And it looks like we weren't the only ones. Another friend said they'd popped two tyres on the same stretch of road.

"I saw one rock that was nearly as big as a beanbag.

"There was one guy by the side of the road who was out of his car, on his mobile phone and with his indicators on, looking down at what appeared to be damage.

"Who knows what caused the damage. Perhaps rocks fell off the back of a truck, or perhaps it was kids. How they got on to both sides of the road is very strange."

Mr Konov said he had a suspicion that the Barnton Quarry Bunker, a council depot that stores gritters, trucks and lorries, could be responsible. He added: "The rocks appeared to be alongside the depot, so you have to wonder if a vehicle dropped some of its load."

A council spokesman said: "The Barnton depot was closed overnight on January 12."

Lothian and Borders Police confirmed that they had received reports of the two incidents. They are now investigating.
