Over 100 bids received for Edinburgh police boxes

AT LEAST 130 bids have been received for Edinburgh’s redundant police boxes by Lothian and Borders Police.

The force said today that some of the sealed bids may contain multiple offers for the 22 boxes it is selling off.

No guide price was given, but bids of at least £2,000 were expected.

Police said the boxes were “surplus to operational requirements”, but others were being retained for traffic wardens and as community contact points.

The cast-iron boxes are Edinburgh’s unique variation on the once-ubiquitous concrete design beloved by Doctor Who fans, some of which remain in Glasgow.

Built between 1931 and 1933 by Edinburgh city architect Ebenezer Macrae to blend in with its townscape, the boxes feature the city crest and saltire-patterned mouldings.
