Over 100 arrested in Aberdeen over court orders

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said that fine defaulters with an accumulated debt of more than £29,000 had been dealt with in the city during the three-week long initiative, which forms part of a Scotland-wide crackdown codenamed Operation RAC.

She said: “A dedicated team of officers started the campaign on 20 January, and have been assisted by various representatives, including the Scottish Court Service, Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, Community Safety Partnership, and the Criminal Justice and Social Work Department.

“They arrested 102 people wanted for outstanding crimes, non-payment of fines, failure to appear at court, or failure to comply with court orders.”

“A total of 129 apprehension warrants were executed, while 158 warrants were carried out for failure to pay fines - with the accumulated debt of £29,230 owed to the court.

“In addition, 31 people were in wanted in connection with violence and assaults, and 27 individuals were arrested in connection with drugs offences.

“Drugs with an estimated street value of £1500 were also recovered by officers during the initiative, and seven men and one woman were separately charged.”

A spokesman for the force’s Alcohol and Violence Reduction Unit said: “The aim of this initiative was to target those involved in criminality and ensure those who commit crime are held accountable for their actions.

“Operation RAC will continue to disrupt criminal activity, target criminals and help prevent crimes from happening.”

Cliff Binning, chief operations officer for the Scottish Court Service, said: “We work with our justice partners to pursue all unpaid fines from road violations to court penalties and collection rates remain strong right across Scotland.

“If you have an outstanding fine in the Aberdeen area, we urge you to catch up with your payments now. If you don’t, you could be the next person to see a warrant issued for your arrest.”
