Out of the Blue plan to give TA centre new life

A HISTORIC Army drill hall is set to be turned into a community arts centre and live music venue to provide a new home for a celebrated city arts group.

Converting the old Territorial Army building in Leith would save the Out of the Blue Trust, which runs the popular Bongo Club, from becoming homeless.

The trust’s plans to base an artistic community in the Dalmeny Street building are expected to win the backing of the city council at a meeting tomorrow.

The move would signal the end of a race against time for Out of the Blue, which will soon have to leave its existing centre in New Street to make way for a multi-million-pound redevelopment project.

The trust’s joint co-ordinator Robert Hoon said today: "It is good news. We feel what we do is important to Edinburgh and we are keen to make sure we can continue elsewhere."

The B-listed building, which is much bigger than the trust’s current home, would be transformed into a community arts centre and live music venue under the trust’s plans.

The new centre would provide artist studios and workshops as well as housing a cafe, crche and art gallery. Mr Hoon said the site would also provide temporary accommodation for artists.

The Bongo Club nightclub will not move to Dalmeny Street. Out of the Blue is still looking for a suitable new city centre site for the club.

The council received two letters objecting to the Dalmeny Street proposal from local residents concerned about an increase in noise levels. Concerns were also raised over plans to apply for a licence to sell alcohol until 11pm, an increase in traffic and that it could become busier if used as a Fringe Festival venue.

Councillors are expected to approve the trust’s application tomorrow.
