Zero tolerance

IN YOUR report (Court protest as student found guilty of racism, 14 September) you quoted Sheriff Charlie Macnair as saying: “This was a racist incident. In particular, the part of your behaviour which I find most serious was that you described Mr Reitblat as a terrorist because of his association with Israel.”

It is reported that he continued by stating: “It’s the direct equivalent of those who suggest that all Muslims are terrorist.”

Paul Donnachie’s sentence was considerably less than that allowed by law, after Sheriff Macnair exercised his discretion. Despite the leniency of the sentence, with his dismissal from St Andrews University and his academic future now in grave doubt, Donnachie has paid a heavy price for his racism, arrogance and drunken stupidity.

He is due as much sympathy as he has shown his victim – none.
