You get your teeth into developers saying no to a housing plan, charity bookshops and renting out parking bays

The move to pull the plug on a homes development beside the seaside at Portobello whetted our readers' appetite for commenting.

Well if developers were not so greedy they would have had this passed. There are several similar projects, very high density dwellings, small pokey rooms etc already built in the city and un-occupied. Seems like the only demand is for even more blocks of student flats. How this will effect the myriad of buy-to-letters, given the reduction in college funding and calls for early repayment of student loans, is unclear.

I'm not sure just banging up more cheaply built flats and calling them "luxury" is the answer. I'm from Edinburgh but live elsewhere and on a recent trip I found the density of housing quite appalling. Especially in north Edinburgh, these flats are squashed together with very little living space for the occupants.

A new charity bookshop is to be opened in the Capital. It'll be the biggest one in the city to date and will be opened by St Columba's Hospice as it bids to raise funds. Here's your take on it. In fact, we got a mini-debate on our hands . . .

Wonderful, but the vigilant ones out there won't find any books worth a King's ransom, they will be well hidden.

I'm not sure what alex is on about but I don't think the opening of yet another charity shop is something to be chuffed about. I was in Musselburgh and Portobello at the weekend and just about all the shops there are charity shops, bookies or pubs. There's a pattern here. It's not a good pattern.

A more rational point . . .

Some of the charity shops need to remember they are getting their stock for nothing. I was in a charity bookshop yesterday and saw an art book I liked the look of – it was 30. Needless to say, I didn't buy it.

Since so many charity shops are hiring managers and assistant managers it belies the initial setting up of them: ie give freely, help freely. Thankfully some are still manned by volunteers and price the goods at a competitive price. However, many have lost the plot and often want more than the item can be bought new.

Let's turn over a new leaf. Home-owners are renting out parking spaces to car clubs. A few were driven round the bend here.

What permit bays are residents entitled to rent out? I would've thought this could only be residents renting their driveway. I don't know of any permit bays in the city that residents own.

And on a different tangent.

A shame that Streetcar, an American-owned car sharing company will be competing against a long-standing Edinburgh car club (City Car Club) who have been here for ten years now.

Finally, let's take a look at the news that Gillespie's pupils are being moved to Darroch. Road Raga's got a warning here.

The last time a school temporarily moved into Darrochs, it was a nightmare with selfish parents driving their little darlings to the school, parking on the pavement etc.

So look out for those 4x4s.
