No sympathy for people caught putting out rubbish on the wrong day, and posts on selling off Lothian Buses

Are the city's environ-mental wardens just officious jobsworths for dishing out fines for putting rubbish out on the wrong day? You're having none of it. You're right behind them.

We need more of this enforcement, not less. At least twice a week on my walk to work I have to pick my way around bags which have been left out for the seagulls to rip apart, and rotting food waste is strewn across the pavements. And all because the residents in the "eastern edge of the New Town" don't want to lose two parking spaces to allow safe, clean, containerised refuse collection.

As someone about to pay the price of a "world heritage site" roof repair in keeping with the materials befitting the period and property, it is a complete joke that the streets of one of the most beautiful cities in the world resemble an open landfill site some mornings. More, not less, of these fines need to be issued.

Currency expires at midnight

The council should just put bins in these areas. If councils can make compulsory purchases on properties then they should have the powers to install bins on the grounds of public health. Stuff the snobs.

The Sheriff

Yep, time to force the big bins on New Town residents. What's the difference between a big bin and a big black 4WD?

JFW

Bin bags put out on the wrong day are an invitation to rats, foxes and birds and are a complete blight on the city. Absolutely no excuse for doing this and it should be treated as a serious environmental crime.

But there was some backing for the residents

This is total nonsense. You put your bins or bags on the expected day, and they are not collected. What do you do? We've had delays in emptying our bins of between two days and two weeks. There's no way to predict when waste will be collected with the current set-up. It's nonsense that they fine people for putting out rubbish on the "wrong day".

Are they going to sell off Lothian Buses to pay for the trams? Many of you are ready to believe it.

Seems to me that it was pretty clear from the start that Lothian Buses would get saddled with the debt from the trams. People have been posting here for a couple of years now, and warning that LRT will be a victim of the tram costs.

This is rubbish. We have a great bus service so why sell it off? The trams will never be as good as the bus.

Don't forget that a vast proportion of Edinburgh residents live nowhere near the tram line nor have any intention or need to travel anywhere on its route. We would quite like our award-winning bus service retained, expanded and improved.

Why would they sell it? The way the tram and bus companies are set up at the moment means the bus company will effectively subsidise the trams. If you take that away, aside from the short-term cash injection into the tram project, it means the tram would have to stand on its own financially when it was up and running
