Wrong note

WHILE I am sorry my performance last week was not to your reviewer's taste (review, 22 June), I do think she should check her facts more carefully.

Stating that my professional background lies more in ethno-musicology than in live performance is something that a quick check of my website would have avoided.

I have been a professional performer for 40 years in Canada, and have played with some of the best folk/roots/world music ensembles in the country (Muddy York, Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, LOKA, Njacko Backo) as well as leading my own band and performing in numerous theatrical productions.

The fact that I have researched and written articles about some of the music I perform seems to be a sin in her eyes, and, in fact, to many people in the press. Weird.

Painters are not maligned for studying art or writers for doing research for their novels, but if a musician actually knows something about the music they play, they are handed the black spot.
