World Cup losers

Fascinating though this debate is over the “honesty” or otherwise involved in Fifa World Cup bidding processes, seldom do we read about the impact upon the losers.

If “brown paper bags” full of treats of whatever denomination have changed hands, let us not forget how many countries invested millions haplessly, losing a bid they were never ever going to win.

The media focus on alleged corruption, while numerous countries put extensive resources into bidding, hopes held high, but had no chance whatsoever from the outset of receiving anything other than a massive printing bill.

For me, that’s the real crime.
